"I was like you, once. Shy, self-conscious and worried that each of these traits were holding me back from new friends, a boyfriend, etc. I always thought that being shy made other people feel awkward, so many of the conversations I had with people I didn’t know well were peppered with long silences and awkward moments. I tried pushing myself to change;to be confident, be different. But the lesson I learnt in the end was that you cannot force yourself into being something you simply are not. Do not push yourself to change because of what other people may think. Confidence is something that comes very slowly over a period of time for those who were not born with it naturally. I am still not a confident person but I am a far cry from the shy person I once was. And despite once yearning to be more confident, I’ve since found that being shy is a much better way to silently put people through a sort of test. Its the people that come to YOU and try to get to know you that you want to hold on to, anyone else who doesn’t bother isn’t worth your time worrying over. And, trust me, eventually, you will be taken by the urge to walk up to someone shy, someone in whom you see yourself, and try to get to know them.
Being shy is a virtue, because it means you think before you act, you take other people’s feelings into consideration and you are more modest than not. Please don’t try and change yourself just for all the ‘what if’ situations. I’m not saying you shouldn’t put yourself out there every once in a while, just that your friends, boyfriends, whoever, they should all accept you for who you are, not for who you are pretending or trying to be.Don’t give up on who you are; rather, embrace it."
